Running
on Dreams, a book about Autism and Acceptance
by Herb Heiman, captures many bittersweet and humorous
events that bring new insight to a familiar world—the
world of heartbreak for two teen boys whose relationship
starts out quite turbulently but evolves into a friendship
of loyalty and trust.
Meet Justin, a 15-year-old boy with autism who is starting
his first semester in a mainstream school. Then meet
Brad, the school track star, all-around "cool guy,"
and Justin's assigned aide. These two middle-school
boys are tossed together in a story of teenage angst,
confusion, and friendship.
The novel is written from both Justin's and Brad's perspectives
giving the reader the twin views and feelings of incidents
from both boy's points of view.
This conflict is the backdrop that captures the feelings
of anger, frustration and estrangement experienced by
so many students who are labeled, special needs. Their
emotional scars are very real… and very painful.
